Music
On the Road Again
Willie Nelson comes to NYC
Come one come all, to this hootenanny. Even if you’re not a fan of country music you know this 77-year-old’s songs, you probably sing them every time you’re road “tripping”. But, for you youngin’s or those who only remember him from Half Baked let me give you a little background on this troublemaker. Ten-time Grammy Award winner, eight time CMA winner, seven time AMA winner Willie Nelson has a music career spanning 50 years. He has performed with various artists ranging from Johnny Cash to Snoop Dogg. He has been involved in major motion pictures and TV series; he’s written four books and he’s released over 130 albums—not to mention the songs he wrote for other artists.
He is the front man for the 2005 formed Willie Nelson Biodiesel. The company that’s striking at the heart of American truck stops by attempting to market fuel made from vegetable oil. In 2005, Willie headlined a concert to benefit the victims of the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake, which raised $120,000 for UNICEF among other organizations. He also has been working with the Animal Welfare Institute to pass the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act. And, if you like ice cream, and honestly who doesn’t; pick up a tub of Ben & Jerry’s “Willie Nelson’s Country Peach Cobbler Ice Cream” so that the proceeds might go to Farm Aid.
Besides all of that, this ex-highwayman is an all-around icon not just in country music, but in all facets of music. His songs have been covered by artists from many different genres. He’s as American as apple pie or baseball. He’s widely known to politicians and musicians as a force to be reasoned with. Not to mention that the majority of our readers have already been listening to his music since the day they born, whether they know it or not.
So, if that’s not enough reason to go see Willie Nelson play at The Grand Ballroom at the Manhattan Center on May 6, then how about the fact that his guitar of choice is a Martin N-20, I know about 5 guys that just swooned reading that. Still not enough motivation?! Then why don’t you come to support the release of the new record Country Music, which just came out with on April 20 with producer T-Bone Burnett, consisting of an all acoustic set of country and gospel songs. So come on, have a soul, see the show.
