The idea itself of “Riding the Bus With My Sister: Live!” is hilarious. We almost don’t want anyone to actually perform, for fear of it not working. We’re not too worried, though, considering the talented individuals who put together tonight’s event at Union Hall.
First off, some history: based on a 2002 memoir by Rachel Simon, Riding the Bus With My Sister is a TV movie that aired in 2005 (has it been five years already?). It stars Rosie O’Donnell, which is really all you need to know. Rosie plays Simon’s sister, Beth, who has a developmental disability. There’s nothing funny about mental disabilities, but what makes Riding such a cult classic is Rosie’s performance. She’s totally over-the-top, clearly aiming for an Emmy and actually does a disservice to the person they’re impersonating.
Eliot Glazer, who writes for Urlesque, became fascinated by the film, and during tonight’s event, he’ll share his obsession, complete with a screening and MST3K-esque commentary. Comedians Matt McCarthy, John Gemberling, Ed Larson and Dan St. Germain will also be there to help out. Plus, free Koosh balls and donuts, Rosie’s favorite things.
The 10 p.m. event is free. For more info, please click here.
