Encore exclusive interview with The Golden Filter
New York based band The Golden Filter are going for the gold in the way of electro pop. Their lyrics, though based mostly on the mythical and magical, tell a story and get to the heart of personal relations. Their music is full of life and energy, creating a great sound to chill to, or dance to. Together the duo makes a melody we can all enjoy in varied situations and environments. The band met in the apartment complex they both lived in. Ohio native Stephen Hindman plays the synth while Trappes’ soft yet sharp vocals help the lyrical style and message come across.
We sat down with the band to find out more about their past, present and future.
How did The Golden Filter get together?
We happened to be neighbors with nearly identical influences of imagery and music despite living worlds apart most of our lives.
What is the meaning of the name “The Golden Filter”?
It’s a reference to a tinted world that we see and feel, and would like to have others look through to also experience with us.
Stephen, not much is said about your life in Ohio, what are we missing out on?
Hide and seek in cornfields, keg parties, recording Dusty Springfield covers with a double cassette deck and a broken bass guitar, and swimming.
At Penelope, how was the transition from the Australian “countryside” to the streets of New York for you?
I was traveling a lot before coming to NYC so it wasn’t such a hardĀ transition.
You’ve been involved in a few remixes, which ones were your favorite?
The last one we did that we can’t mention yet. Second would be our Peter Bjorn and John remix swap.
Who writes most of your music?
We both write 100% of our own music. We also produce our own music along with doing our own artwork and photography.
What were you aiming for with the music on the Voluspa?
A very cohesive album that takes the listener down a distinct goldenĀ path.
Their new album Voluspa, named after the ancient Nordic poem, was released in April on Brille Records, based in the UK. They will be celebrating said release at the Mercury Lounge on May 14. For more information, please visit www.mercuryloungenyc.com.
