The Hudson River Valley witnessed magnificent developments in landscape gardening in the 19th century like nowhere else in America, creating an American version of Romanticism. Today, the grounds of numerous historic riverfront properties are preserved and open to the public.

The Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area organized a month-long celebration September 19 – October 24 to celebrate these historic landscape gardens. The celebration featured an online exhibit, activities at 11 historic properties and events highlighting the release of several new books on the subject.

The official closing event of the month-long celebration will take place at the Vanderbilt Mansion National Historic Site in Hyde Park Sunday. The event will have three components in addition to brief opening remarks: book signings for Landscape Gardens on the Hudson: A History (Black Dome Press) and the photo book Gardens of the Hudson Valley (The Monacelli Press) featuring photographs by Susan Daley and Steve Gross, both of which were published during the month-long celebration, and a guided tour of the mansion’s historic designed grounds, led by Robert M. Toole.

Sunday, October 24th, at 2:00 pm
