About:

In celebration of the 30th anniversary of her first New York season, Armitage Gone! Dance presents selections from Karole Armitage’s landmark works Drastic Classicism (1981) and The Watteau Duets (1985), as well as a world premiere. Dubbed the “punk ballerina,” Armitage pioneered a high-voltage, hard-rock ballet style that employed irony, parody, incongruous juxtapositions, and humor to create dances that pushed the limits of classical ballet technique and re-envisioned its sonic and pictorial environment.

Performed to Rhys Chatham’s clangorous score, Drastic Classicism delivers a skewed classical vocabulary with full force, often at breakneck speed, breaking balletic decorum to create new formal values. The Watteau Duets, set to music by David Linton, deconstructs the ballet pas de deux, exposing its often-ignored erotic and power play elements. These evenings also feature the deft, wry Wild Thing (1987), set to music by Jimi Hendrix with a set by Jeff Koons, and the world premiere of Ever get the feeling you’ve been cheated?, with an original score by Daniel Iglesia.

Featuring dancers Leonides Arpon, Kristina Bethel, Megumi Eda, William Isaac, Luke Manley, Matthew Prescott, Abbey Roesner, Bennyroyce Royan, and Masayo Yamaguchi. With Music Director John King and featuring TALIBAM! (Matt Mottel and Kevin Shea) and guitarists Sarah Lipstate, Steven Gunn, Paul Duncan, and Tom Gerke.
