About:

As directed by Ernest Abuba, Shogun Macbeth channels Shakespeare’s tragic tale of power and greed to the feudal military dictatorship of 12th century Japan – the Kamakura Period, a time of warring clans. In his adaptation, John R. Briggs retains Shakespeare’s language while interweaving classical Japanese traditions. Shogun Macbeth incorporates the art forms of Noh and Kyogen theatre, along with spectacular samurai sword fights, and the three witches become “Yojos,” obake creatures with supernatural powers. The New York Times has said, “It is …a Kurosawa film on stage…At its bloody heart, the play is still Macbeth with a universality transcending time, place and performance style.”
